I woke up this morning from a dream about dancing. I was at a Babylonian church and they said "Tonight, we are just going to dance". But then one of the first things I saw on Facebook this morning was about an historical dance that occurred tonight in 1836.
"IN THE EVENING OF FEBRUARY 10, 1836, A BALL WAS GIVEN IN HONOR OF DAVID CROCKETT IN BEXAR, Texas. It is Antonio Menchaca, who in his “Memoirs” gives us the source to the history of this event. Menchaca tells that he on February 10, 1836, was invited by officers to a ball given in honor of Crockett and was asked to invite all the principal ladies in the city to it. Menchaca, Crockett, Bowie, and Travis all attended, while Seguin and Neill were not present. While at the ball, at about one o’clock a.m. of the 11th, a courier sent by Placido Benavides arrived from Camargo with the intelligence that Santa Anna was starting from the Presidio de Rio Grande with thirteen thousand troops, ten thousand infantry and three thousand cavalry with the view of taking San Antonio.
Benavides’ letter, which was in Spanish, was given to Menchaca as Colonel Seguin was not present. Bowie who understood Spanish also read the letter, and called Travis, who was busy dancing with the most beautiful lady in San Antonio. Travis came and brought Crockett with him. Travis said it would take Santa Anna thirteen or fourteen days to get here, and he suggested that they continued the dance and make provision for their defense next day. The ball continued until seven a.m."
