Although this article is about tomatoes, I have read that it works for almost any fruit or vegetable, as well as cooked or dried meats.
Just be sure that the food does not touch other foods in the container of ash. And be sure that the bottom, sides and top of all food is completely covered in ash. Best to store the container of ash covered food in a cool place such as in the ground or other dark, cool place.
