Iran and Hezbollah have launched a project for repopulating the formerly Sunni Muslim region between Damascus and the Lebanese border with Shiite migrants, who are being imported in droves from Iraq and Lebanon. Sunni refugees trying to return home from Lebanon as the fighting abated found their homes had been seized by Shiite families. Zabadani, which sits midway on the road from Damascus to Lebanon, for instance, was once a Sunni town. It is now filling up with Shiite civilian families brought over from Iraq and Lebanon.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Al-Abadi Friday decreed the inclusion of the pro-Iranian Popular Mobilization Forces (PMU) in the country’s security forces. The paramilitary group, also known by its Arabic name Hashd al-Shaabi, will henceforth receive equivalent salaries and other benefits the same as the country’s military personnel under the Ministry of Defense. PMU members may also enroll in military colleges and institutions. He has detached some of its units for special training to fight in Syria in the service of Tehran.
